Building Justice

Breaking Ground on the Next Century of Legal Education

Resolution in Support of the Building Justice Capital Campaign

Whereas, all internal and external assessments have identified the need to build a new facility, and the American Bar Association has repeatedly observed the inadequacies of a facility built in 1963 and its constraints upon planned growth and the transformation of legal education; and

Whereas, despite the dated and constraining conditions of the facility, the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law has successfully advanced each of its ambitious goals in national ranking, international reach and impact, innovative program creation and implementation, student engagement, faculty recruitment, and development and deployment of technology; and

Whereas, a new facility will not only redress current constraints but will accelerate the achievement of the college’s ambitious objectives; and

Whereas, University leadership fully supports the proposed campaign to construct a new facility through support for bonding, public and private fundraising strategies, and new revenue streams; and

Whereas, in initial conversations with more than 100 alumni, business leaders, and community representatives they have indicated their support and interest in joining a campaign to raise at least $50 million for a new facility, programs, and scholarships; and

Whereas, external campaign consultants have concluded that a campaign of this size is eminently achievable; and

Whereas, each Trustee of the College of Law has committed to a personal investment in this campaign; now therefore be it

RESOLVED, that I, as an alum of the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law endorse the creation and launching of a capital campaign to build a new facility for the College of Law, fund scholarships, and support faculty and program development to achieve our core objectives of building justice in local, national, and global communities.
